Android 11 - What's New

Google has officially released Android 11 Update which is now available for the latest Pixel phones . Google Android 11 operating system is characterized by three major themes: control, people and privacy.

People

Speaking of notifications, Google hopes to "reshape the way we talk on mobile phones" to make the Android system "more people-oriented and expressive." First of all, there is a special section called "Dialog" at the top of the notification shadow to ensure that important reminders from the short message application are not lost. Everything else appears under the "Notifications" or "Mute" section.

Another way that Android 11 focuses on "people" is to access conversations with just one tap. Supported messages can be bubbled by tapping the lower right corner of the notification from the shadow. Click on the bubble to display the entire message thread and allow you to reply to the complete context. They can be thrown anywhere on the screen and slide by dragging to the bottom.
The responsible application will be noted in the lower right corner, and the sender’s name and message preview will appear a few seconds after receipt and disappear. Developers can customize the bubble to display a full set of operations in the top bar, and inline suggestions and other content will appear as you do in the app. Opening the bubble will cause the notification to disappear from the status bar.

Privacy protection

Privacy is the last touchstone of the Android 11 system. One-time permissions allow you to restrict app access to microphones, cameras, and locations. If you do not use an app for a "long time", the permissions will be reset automatically.

Similarly, Google Play Store will review all Android applications that request background location access.

Optimize folding device support

Android 11 adds cutout API, which can help APP automatically adapt to the screen. If it is a hole-punched screen, avoid elements being blocked by the punched area; if it is a curved screen, the system will add a Display Cutout area to mark the curved surface of the screen. Let the APP choose to avoid placing content in this area, and optimize the support for waterfall screens, foldable devices, and hinge angle sensors.

Control center

Smart phones are undoubtedly the center of our digital life. Google and Android 11 hope that through your daily drive, you will have more control over all other smart devices.
When you press the lock screen button, you will see a completely revised full-screen power menu. First of all, there is a row of three buttons on the top of it, namely emergency, shutdown and restart. It depends on whether you enable "lock"-biometric unlocking is disabled before entering the password-if so, only "power" will be displayed, and tap it will display both "shutdown" and "restart". Next is the Google Pay refill card and pass, but it should be familiar to existing Pixel users.

The biggest new feature here is the device control part. With the support of the Google Home app, you can quickly switch the lights on/off, you can also drag to adjust the brightness, and smart lock. A series of integrations are possible, including quickly adjusting the thermostat, checking the surveillance camera, starting the vacuum cleaner, controlling the smart display playback, turning on and off the TV, and Google even showed the launch of the "home" macro/assistant program. Android 11 provides this special shortcut to achieve these controls instead of relying on voice commands or having to find the Home app.
At the same time, the second aspect of the control device center is audio playback. Music app controls no longer appear with all other notifications, but are now part of the quick settings. At the initial pull, there is a new media card-it also appears on the lock screen-just below the six QS buttons. The responsible application is displayed in the corner, and you will find cover art and track information below. The right is the basic controls, and the upper right corner is an output switcher, which can display what is currently being played, such as mobile phone speakers, Bluetooth headsets, etc.
As part of the new UI, the quick setting for full drag only displays six tiles to ensure that the part is not too high. Another delicate touch is that when interacting anywhere on the music card, a new ripple animation will appear.

Optimize 5G experience

Android 11 adds three functions: "According to traffic, 5G detection, and bandwidth estimation". Once it is determined that the user’s current network is not billed by traffic, this function can display higher resolution content (such as 4k video), upload logs, backup files, and actively download content.

The 5G detection function can detect whether the device is connected to a 5G network, and can also display whether it is connected to a 5G SA (standalone) network or an NSA (non-standalone) network.

The bandwidth estimation will give the bandwidth estimation value so that the user can choose which video resolution to use.

Turn off the notification sound when recording

Many people have encountered a sudden news when recording a video on a mobile phone, affecting the video being recorded. To this end, Android 11 introduces a new mechanism to turn off notification sounds and vibrations during active shooting to avoid affecting video recording.

Location access permissions

Android 11 has changed the location information access permissions. If a function in the application accesses location information from the background, the user will be asked to verify whether such access is necessary.

Force the app to call the built-in camera

Android 11 cancels the function of apps calling third-party camera apps, and the system automatically selects the pre-installed camera apps. The reason for this is for privacy and security. Of course, the use of third-party camera apps will not be affected, and users can still use third-party camera apps to take pictures and videos, and only the calling permissions are blocked.
Seamless system update

Android 11 introduces a virtual A/B partition scheme, which means that the terminal device sets two copies of important system partitions, one of which is in use, and the other can be updated without leaving the Android environment. Therefore, the user does not need to wait for Android to complete the update of the system application on the recovery screen, and the entire update process is almost performed in the background, saving users a lot of time.

Other notable additions:

62 new emojis, 55 more skin tone and gender variants.

There is a redesigned screenshot interface, after capturing, you will get a small preview in the lower right corner. There, there are quick shortcuts for sharing and editing.

The recorded multitasking menu no longer displays a row of application suggestions. Instead, there are "screenshot" and "select" buttons, and the application card is much larger.

As part of the previous changes, you can get application forecasts directly in the Dock. If any of the four blanks are not filled, Pixel Launcher will provide a contextual suggestion.

Auto-fill prompts-saved passwords, copied text, 2FA codes, etc.-can appear directly in the suggestion line above the keyboard (including Gboard), enabling one-click paste/input.

Built-in screen recorder, audio capture can be accessed from quick settings.

The picture-in-picture window can be resized by dragging the upper left corner.

Voice access uses the "visual cortex on the device" to understand screen content and context. Generate tags and access points for accessible voice commands.

More Pixel theme icon shapes: pebble, bill, octagon.

Redesigned notification history source.

Android 11 allows exposed notification applications to run without enabling device location settings.
